In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
The National Arts Centre finally opened in June 1969, two years behind schedule and $30 million over the originally budgeted $16 million.
Opening weekend featured back-to-back performances by the National Ballet of Canada. On the second night, while the NBC danced John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, something went wrong with the hydraulics in the orchestra pit. The National Ballet Orchestra’s conductor George Crum and some of the musicians found themselves rising slowly above stage level during the performance. Crum would say later it was “the only time I ever looked down on Celia Franca,” who performed that night as Lady Capulet.
