A 39-year-old Gatineau man is facing criminal charges of uttering threats to his 35-year-old roommate and breaching conditions related to a previous charge.

Gatineau police were called to a basement apartment at 104 rue de Pointe-Gatineau at 3:50 p.m. on Thursday to assist with a man who had been acting aggressively and uttering death threats towards his roommate.

The roommate left the apartment after receiving the threats and called the police with a cellphone.

The man was found to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Police said they were also informed that the man could be in possession of a knife. They surrounded the apartment and asked the man to follow verbal instructions, but initially he refused to co-operate.

A police tactical intervention unit was called to assist, and the bureau of criminal investigations became involved, said Jean-François Beauchamp, a lieutenant with the Gatineau police service.

The man finally exited his apartment at 6:45 p.m. and was arrested. He was then take to a police station for interrogation.

No injuries were reported.

The man is expected to appear in Gatineau court on Friday morning.
