Police believe that four teens had just left a bush party when the car they were riding in lost control and crashed in Stittsville Sunday evening, killing two young women.

The two other teens are in hospital in critical condition.

One of the victims has been identified by friends on social media as Maddie Clement, 17.

Police said the Chevrolet Cobalt the teens were riding in was heading east on Fernbank Road when it appears to have attempted to pass several vehicles, lost control and went into the ditch.

The car landed in a wooded area.

Investigators, who are still mapping the scene where the road remains closed, want to talk to anyone who was with the teens at the party or witnessed the fatal collision, Det. Alain Boucher said.

“We will soon have a drone fly over to take an aerial shot of the scene and where the car ended up, because it’s really hard to survey the scene with our regular equipment,” he said. The flyover will help police gain data from the scene and possibly determine the cause of the crash.

“It’s going to be a long process from here,” said Boucher.

The two teenage girls, both born in 1999, died at the scene. A 17-year-old girl and 18-year-old man were taken to hospital with multiple trauma. They are in critical condition but are expected to survive.

While stressing that investigators don’t yet know what happened in this fatal collision, Boucher warned young people to be careful on the roads during the graduation-season revelry.

“I don’t want to draw a connection to this collision because we don’t know exactly what happened,” he said. “But at this time of year, the graduating students hold parties, they get together – we’ve all done it – so they have to be mindful who gets to drive the vehicle. Probably best to get yourself picked up by an adult, or get things arranged so that you get home safely.

“Pre-planning your trip is of the utmost importance.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the collision unit it (613) 236-1222 ext. 2481.

An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesman said the two female teens, both around 17, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Fernbank Road, near Jinkinson Road.

Ottawa Fire Service said police were notified of the crash at 9:22 p.m. Three of the four individuals in the vehicle were unconscious, and all four had to be extricated from it.

Police later advised that Fernbank Road would be closed from Jinkinson Road to West Ridge Drive until further notice. Motorists were asked to avoid the area.
