A billboard that caught whiffs of weed, or whatever else people were smoking, served as a candid camera for patriotic puffers who took in Canada Day from the Quebec side.

Prohibition, a seller of smoking goods, set up an electronic billboard on the banks of the Ottawa River opposite Parliament Hill showing a countdown to July 1, 2018.

That’s when the Liberal government says it will provide “regulated and restricted” access to marijuana.

But the billboard also contained a smoke detector. When it sniffed smoke, it invited smokers to get interactive.

“As people were interacting with the billboard they were being filmed in secret, kind of like a YouTube social experiment,” explained Prohibition’s Christopher Mennillo, adding that the ruse was quickly over when a camera crew approached seeking permission to use the footage in a future video.

“All that fun video footage that we got of real people in the real world actually smoking cannabis on Canada Day with the fireworks in the background, it gives us great, great footage because it’s the real deal, this is really what Canadians are doing.

“A lot of people were very ecstatic” to take part, Mennillo said, saying that cannabis is coming out of the closet.

“It’s no longer Woodstock, it’s no longer tie-dyed t-shirts and hippy haircuts,” he said. “It’s now the young professional and the medical patient. The demographic is so wide it’s hard to tell who is and isn’t a smoker these days…

“I notice that walking down the street, I’ll smell it so much more often that I used to. I think it’s just an indicator that there are a lot more people who are openly smoking.”

Keep in mind, folks. It’s not legal – yet.
