An investigation is underway Wednesday morning after an overnight fire heavily damaged an abandoned house and chicken coop near the city’s rural eastern border.

Ottawa Fire Services was called to 3565 Larmours Rd. near Birchgrove Road by a 2:30 a.m. 911 call reporting smoke and flames.

They discovered the chicken coop and the house in flames.

The coop was gutted but firefighters worked for another couple of hours to save the house. They were clearing the scene by about 5:30 a.m.

Damage is estimated at $40,000. A fire investigator was called to the scene.

Firefighters tackled two blazes in abandoned homes last month, one on Nicolls Island Road in Manotick June 5 and a second on Ogilvie Rd. near Cyrville Road June 16.

Both were under investigation.
