Quick action by firefighters prevented flames from spreading through a five-unit building in Sarsfield, the Ottawa fire department reported Monday.

A 911 call reporting smoke from an electrical outlet summoned fire crews to 2870 Colonial Rd. at 10:53 a.m.

In a “rapid intervention,” firefighters tracked the fire to an electrical panel in one unit and extinguished it while colleagues evacuated the other residents of the building.

The fire was under control at 11:21 a.m., but crews continued to remove insulation, drywall and other materials to ensure it hadn’t spread.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to safely evacuate their home when there are signs of smoke, no matter the colour. Place your call from outside the structure where it is safe to do so,” the fire department said in a media release. “Also, when evacuating a structure, please close doors behind you. This simple strategy can help limit fire spread and growth.”
