The jobless rate in Ottawa jumped to 6.1 per cent in June from 5.8 per cent in May, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
However, the rate dropped slightly in Gatineau to 5.5 per cent from 5.6 per cent, to bring the capital region’s overall unemployment rate to 5.9 per cent in June from 5.7 per cent in May despite the addition of 2,000 net new jobs.
The region’s labour force grew by 3,800.
Gatineau’s improvement was due to new jobs.
Federal government jobs were down 3,900 in June from May, to 149,900. The total was still well above the year-ago tally of of 128,200.
Technology related jobs registered their fourth straight monthly rise, up 900 to a total of 46,900, the agency reported.
Nationally, the jobless rate slipped to 6.5 per cent in June, compared with 6.6 per cent in May.
Statistics Canada reported the country 45,300 jobs in the month, more than four times the 10,000 estimated by forecasters.
