WASHINGTON—If you are looking for anecdotal evidence that evidence no longer matters in American politics, you can call up someone like Lana Shardea.
Shardea, a 73-year-old in Phoenix, believes Donald Trump is “the most intelligent, powerful, courageous president we’ve had in years,” a man with not just knowledge but “superpower knowledge.” She didn’t pay close attention to politics before Trump came along, but she knows enough to know the mainstream media is unfair to him. Thus, she has found three alternative sources of information.
She follows Trump’s tweets. She watches video from pro-Trump cable channel One America News. And she relies on her friends on Facebook, where she recently shared videos from Fox News and an article from a website called TheRealConservative.info. Its headline: “Rothschild: Donald Trump is threatening to destroy the New World Order.”
Shardea is genuinely confused when she is told that many people believe Trump is dishonest. This president, she says, never changes his personality even a little bit. Isn’t “take me the way I am” the very definition of honesty?
“I don’t see how anybody can say he’s dishonest,” she said. “Dishonest about what? What would it be that he’s dishonest about?”
About almost everything, honestly.
On the day of his inauguration, Trump lied about the weather. The next day, he lied about the size of his inauguration crowd. He has become no less brazen in the 11 months since. The president who won’t change isn’t so much untruthful as anti-truthful, his words so frequently and flagrantly wrong that they amount to a comprehensive rejection of the very idea of accuracy.
The Star has counted 978 false claims since his inauguration, an average of three per day, about everything from media outlets to legislation to the head of the Boy Scouts calling him to pay him a compliment. (Didn’t happen. He just made it up.) As Trump careens from policy to policy and outrage to outrage, lying has been the most consistent feature of his presidency.

(CNN)President Donald Trump told aides he was eager to take questions Friday and hold a news conference to tout his accomplishments before leaving for Mar-a-Lago, but some advisers argued against it.
The aides were eager to avoid him being besieged with questions about the investigation into Russian election meddling and other matters that could overshadow the tax bill he had signed into law, two White House officials told CNN.
The President's schedule remained in flux over the last day, amid questions about whether he would stage a public bill-signing ceremony of the tax legislation or hold a news conference. Many previous presidents have held year-end news conferences before leaving for Christmas vacations.
For two straight days, Thursday and Friday, White House aides were told to prepare for a news conference of some kind.
Both plans were scrapped.
Friday morning, aides finally said the President would sign the tax and government funding bills in private. When the pool protested, saying the pictures from a White House photographer wouldn't be used, news reporters and photographers were hastily escorted into the Oval Office for the signing.
The President's mood was bright and he seemed eager to answer a few questions. Aides appeared on higher alert than normal, with Chief of Staff John Kelly and other aides attempting to kick reporters out and get the President on Marine One to Mar-a-Lago.
Trump answered several questions, including whether he had learned anything from the legislative process related to the tax overhaul, whether he would travel to sell the tax package and whether he wished he had started his congressional agenda with infrastructure.
"We're going to get infrastructure," Trump told reporters. "Infrastructure is the easiest of them all. We're very well on our way. We have essentially repealed Obamacare. You know, the individual mandate was a very big factor in this bill, frankly. A lot of people don't talk about it because the tax cut is so important."
As reporters kept pressing Trump, aides moved closer and closer to the Resolute Desk, gently prodding reporters and photographers to leave the Oval Office. With the President still talking, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn and other officials stood in front of the desk, all but blocking Trump's view.
Finally, White House chief of staff John Kelly also joined in and asked the press to leave, saying: "Helicopter is running out of gas," referring to Marine One that was waiting to take the President to Air Force One.

Despite President Donald Trump’s promises to bring back steel manufacturing, many steel mill workers are facing layoffs.
For example, ArcelorMittal-owned mill in Conshohocken, Penn. announced in September that it would cut 150 of 207 jobs based on seniority. Many steel workers who voted for Trump because they believed he’d be a boon for the industry are feeling abandoned by the president, New York Times reported on Friday.
“He’s just delaying it,” Chuck Hauer, a Trump voter and steelworker in Conshohocken told the Times. “And I think the delay is hurting us more than he knows.”
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump made bringing back steel manufacturing jobs a focal point. “When I’m president, guess what, steel is coming back to Pittsburgh,” he said at a rally in April 2016. He also appealed to voters by rejecting trade deals that he said hurt American workers and then followed up by withdrawing the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and ordered investigations into trade pacts—including into aluminum and steel imports.
The wait to see what the Trump administration plans next has caused uncertainty among industries that use steel. There is also a rush for foreign companies to export their steel into the U.S. before any tariffs are put into place. In the U.S. steel imports were up 19.4% in the first 10 months of 2017, compared to last year’s figures, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Thus far, no tariffs have been introduced, due to disagreement within the Trump administration. The automobile industry along with others have warned that tariffs could end up pushing up costs and lead to job cuts.
“Many economists and industry experts agree that the United States faces unfair competition and artificially low prices that have damaged the domestic steel industry,” Annie Lowrey wrote earlier this year for the Atlantic. “But they don’t agree that a tariff is the right approach for addressing the problem. They argue that tariffs could backfire, hurting American businesses and workers without doing much to revive the Rust Belt.”
A Commerce Department spokesperson told the Times that Trump administration is “aware of the plight of American steelworkers and will continue working to halt unfair trade practices that harm our economy and kill American jobs.” And the president may turn to trade now that his signature tax bill is signed into law.

Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon has lashed out and Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner in a wide-ranging interview, in which he also referenced the (withdrawn) allegation that the President raped a 13-year-old.
Laying bare his disdain for the pair, who he referred to as “Javanka”, he blamed them in Vanity Fair magazine for being the “railhead of all bad decisions” in the White House.
Ms Trump came in for particular criticism after she stepped in to Alabama’s recent special election for the US Senate.
Mr Bannon had heavily backed Republican candidate Roy Moore, whose campaign became embroiled in child sex allegations.
A number of women accused the Alabama Supreme Court Judge of sexual misconduct, including one woman who claimed he molested her when she was 14 years old while he was in his thirties.
Mr Moore denied the allegations, but a number of prominent Republicans distanced themselves from his campaign. Mr Moore lost the seat to Doug Jones, who became the first Democrat to hold a seat in the Republican heartland since 1992.
Although Mr Trump had eventually came out in support of his party’s candidate, at one point during the campaign his daughter said there was “a special place in hell for people who prey on children”.
Responding to Ms Trump's comments in the Vanity Fair interview, Mr Bannon said: “What about the allegations about her dad and that 13-year-old?”
He was referring to an unproven allegation from a California woman that Mr Trump had raped her as a teenager – a claim the US leader denied. The woman dropped a lawsuit making the claim last year.
Mr Trump has also denied claims of sexual misconduct from a number of other women.
Mr Bannon, who left the White House in August after seven months in office, amid infighting with members of Mr Trump’s family, said Ms Trump had been “a fount of bad advice” during the presidential campaign.
The 64-year-old, who returned to the far-right news website Breitbart as chairman, also blamed Mr Kusher for reportedly encouraging the president to fire FBI Director James Comey, during the investigation into alleged collusion between Mr Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia.
US intelligence agencies have concluded Moscow tried to sway the presidential election in favour of Mr Trump. It is alleged that Russian hackers stole information linked to the campaign of his rival Hillary Clinton and passed it to Wikileaks so it could be released to undermine her – a claim Mr Trump has repeatedly denied.
Mr Bannon nonetheless accused Mr Kushner, 36, of being naive and exposing the administration by holding meetings with figures linked to Moscow during the campaign.
“He’s taking meetings with Russians to get additional stuff. This tells you everything about Jared,” he said. “They were looking for the picture of Hillary Clinton taking the bag of cash from Putin. That’s his maturity level.”
Mr Trump fuelled claims of a cover up when he sacked Mr Comey in May, citing his reason as “this Russia thing”. The Department of Justice subsequently appointed ex-FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to look into the matter.
Mr Bannon described Mr Comey’s firing as “the dumbest political decision in modern political history, bar none. A self-inflicted wound of massive proportions”.
