James Comey's book 'A Higher Loyalty' likens Donald Trump to a mafia boss who is 'ego driven and about personal loyalty'

Casting him as a mafia boss-like figure, Mr Comey claims their interactions gave him 'flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor against the Mob'

Washington (CNN) James Comey's upcoming book burst into public view Thursday evening, offering a remarkable look into the former FBI director's relationship with President Donald Trump.

CNN obtained a copy of the book and corroborated news reports about Comey's highly anticipated recounting of his time in the Trump administration.

Comey's recollections detail what he calls Trump's "mob"-like approach to leadership and take aim at the President's disposition, which he says created "the forest fire that is the Trump presidency."

"This President is unethical, and untethered to truth and institutional values," Comey wrote. "His leadership is transactional, ego driven and about personal loyalty."

After Trump fired Comey as FBI director last May, news emerged that Comey kept contemporaneous memos on his conversations with Trump, claiming Trump had asked him to end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Following reports of the memos, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead a special counsel probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential coordination between Trump's associates and Russia.

Comey went on to deliver blockbuster testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, where he accused the President of lying about their interactions.

In his book, Comey wrote about Trump's concern over allegations about blackmail and prostitution contained in an opposition research dossier on Trump written by ex-British intelligence office Christopher Steele, which Comey said the President referred to as "the golden showers thing."

News of the book's contents Thursday set into motion Comey's expected reemergence in the public eye, ahead of his upcoming book tour.

'Flashbacks' of the mob
Comey, a former prosecutor, said in the book that he saw much in common between Trump and the mob bosses he had pursued in a past life.

Comey wrote in one passage that Trump gave him "flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor against the mob."
"The silent circle of assent," Comey described. "The boss in complete control. The loyalty oaths. The us-versus-them worldview. The lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organization above morality and above the truth."

He even drew parallels between a visit to Trump Tower and New York Mafia social clubs he'd seen in the 1980s and 1990s.
Comey portrays President as a bully and a liar who sought to muscle federal investigators like himself.

"What is happening now is not normal," Comey wrote.

'Believe me'
Comey found Trump obsessed with the prostitution allegation, saying that Trump spoke to him on four separate occasions to deny the claim.

The Steele dossier includes an unverified claim that Russian authorities recorded Trump watching prostitutes urinate in a hotel suite.

Comey said Trump called him on January 11, 2017, to explain away the claim.

"'I'm a germaphobe,'" Comey quoted Trump saying. "'There's no way I would let people pee on each other around me. No way.'"
CNN reported shortly before Trump took office that top intelligence officials, including Comey, presented Trump with claims of Russian efforts to compromise him. BuzzFeed News published the full, unverified dossier that included the infamous claim.

Trump lashed out at the reports in a news conference in January 2017, saying, "It's all fake news. It's phony stuff. It didn't happen."

Comey said on the fourth occasion Trump brought up the allegation -- during a March 30, 2017, call -- the President mentioned that the situation was difficult for first lady Melania Trump.

"For about the fourth time, he argued that the 'golden showers thing' wasn't true," Comey wrote, saying Trump asked, "'Can you imagine me, hookers?'"

Political landscape may have influenced Clinton decision
In the book, Comey also addresses one of the most controversial aspects of his tenure atop the FBI -- the decision, just days before the election, to inform Congress that the agency had discovered emails potentially related to the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email practices as secretary of state.

Comey said he has wondered if his assumption that Clinton would inevitably win influenced his choices.

"It is entirely possible that, because I was making decisions in an environment where Hillary Clinton was sure to be the next president, my concern about making her an illegitimate president by concealing the restarted investigation bore greater weight than it would have if the election appeared closer or if Donald Trump were ahead in all polls," Comey wrote. "But I don't know."
Clinton, for her part, has pointed to Comey's controversial decisions as a cause of her defeat.

"He, I think, forever changed history," she told CNN last year.

We know President Donald Trump is a strong man, possibly the strongest and most fit president we’ve ever had.

But even his broad shoulders — which many say are the broadest of all the presidential shoulders — can’t carry the weight of the scandals that are presently piling up.

We’re only one year into Trump’s presidency, and we’re already witnessing its entirely predictable collapse.

Consider the news swirling about on Thursday:

  • Robert Mueller continues to look into whether Trump obstructed justice and whether his campaign colluded with Russia in the 2016 election. And the administration is dealing with other problems, from EPA head Scott Pruitt’s bizarre spending habits to turnover that is unprecedented in American presidential history.
  • Republican lawmakers are announcing plans to retire — most recently House Speaker Paul Ryan — and the sense in Washington, at least among conservatives, is that rough days are ahead.
  • This is untenable. Every president winds up embroiled in some form of scandal, maybe even several. But the sheer volume of controversies consuming the Trump White House is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

Some may be false, some may be exaggerated, some may be legitimate. But their very existence points to a president whose past should have disqualified him from office and whose temperament consistently leads him to trouble.

If we had President Jeb Bush or President Marco Rubio right now, there would be ample partisan squabbling and quite possibly a minor scandal or two. But I feel confident we wouldn’t have “pee tape” trending on Twitter. We wouldn’t have a special counsel closing in on the president or a series of salacious stories about questionable payoffs for past affairs. We wouldn’t have the home and office of the president’s personal attorney being raided by the FBI.

This is too much for Trump to shoulder and it’s too much for this country to maintain. And there’s a good chance that within moments of this column publishing there will be another scandal, and an hour later five more.

Trump will never admit his presidency is collapsing.

But it is, and fast.

And there’s nothing our strong, tough and staggeringly healthy president can do to slow it down.

The resignation was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

He is the second RNC Finance Committee member to step aside in recent months.

Earlier this year, Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned amid allegations that he’d sexually harassed women who’d worked for him.

Broidy, a 62-year-old Los Angeles-based investor, is an influential figure in Republican politics who has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to GOP candidates and committees over the years.

He played a key role in helping Trump raise money ahead of the 2016 election.

He also sits on the board of the influential Republican Jewish Coalition, a group funded in part by billionaire megadonor Sheldon Adelson.

Broidy has come under increasing scrutiny in recent months amid allegations that he tried to negotiate a multimillion-dollar fee to get the U.S. government to cease its investigation into a Malaysian investment fund.

Cohen, whose Manhattan home and office were raided earlier this week by FBI investigators, remains on the RNC finance committee.

Michael Cohen, personal attorney for President Donald Trump, as he arrives to appear before Senate Intelligence Committee in Washington, September 19, 2017.

President Donald Trump's longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, brokered a deal to pay $1.6 million to a former Playboy model who said she was impregnated by Republican National Committee official Elliott Broidy, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to CNBC.

The sources also told CNBC that Cohen was paid $250,000 for negotiating and handling the deal.

Attorneys for Cohen and representatives for the Republican National Committee, as well as lawyers for the former Playboy model, have not yet responded to CNBC's requests for comment. Representatives for Broidy declined to comment.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news of Broidy's payoff to the woman earlier Friday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal reported that the 2017 deal prohibits the woman from discussing the relationship with Broidy, who worked as deputy finance chairman of the GOP committee. Broidy resigned from the committee shortly after the Journal's report. The committee's chairwoman accepted his resignation.

"I acknowledge I had a consensual relationship with a Playboy Playmate," Broidy said in a statement. "At the end of our relationship, this woman shared with me that she was pregnant. She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this difficult period."

Cohen also works for the committee as a national deputy finance chairman. Casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned as RNC national finance chair in February after the Journal reported that he had been accused of sexual misconduct.

The $1.6 million sum was scheduled to be paid to the woman in quarterly installments, beginning in December 2017 and parceled out over the course of two years, according to sources who declined to be named. Broidy still owes money under the deal, although it was unclear how much he still had to pay out.

The development is the latest example of Cohen negotiating nondisclosure agreements and payments to women who allegedly had affairs with his clients. Cohen and Trump are currently being sued by porn star Stormy Daniels, who seeks to void her own hush deal over an alleged dalliance with Trump for which she was paid $130,000.

Cohen is also in the sights of the FBI, who raided his office and residence on Monday and seized records and communications related to the deal with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. The agents also sought documents regarding another woman who allegedly had an affair with Trump, Karen McDougal, who received $150,000 from the parent company of The National Enquirer. The CEO of that company, American Media, is friends with Trump.

The authorities reportedly seized documents and communications related to the now-infamous "Access Hollywood" tape containing audio of Trump boasting about sexual harassment.

Broidy was a prominent supporter of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, and contributed to the then-candidate's fundraising efforts as vice chairman of the Trump Victory Fund, which combined state and national Republican committees.

Broidy apologized to his family in his statement: "It is unfortunate that this personal matter between two consenting adults is the subject of national discussion just because of Michael Cohen's involvement. Mr. Cohen reached out to me after being contacted by this woman's attorney, Keith Davidson. Although I had not previously hired Mr. Cohen, I retained Mr. Cohen after he informed me about his prior relationship with Mr. Davidson."
