Trump's name submitted for Nobel Peace Prize consideration by Republican group
Messer, Republicans cite Trump's 'tireless work' to bring peace through strength

A group of House Republicans is seeking the Nobel Peace Prize for President Donald Trump because of his work to ease nuclear tensions with North Korea.

Luke Messer, from Indiana, made the suggestion in a letter Wednesday sent to members of the Norwegian Nobel committee. It was signed by 17 other Republicans. Any consideration of Trump's case would be for the prize awarded in late 2019, as the deadline for 2018 passed on Feb. 1.

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are working out the details of a historic summit that could take place by the end of May or early June. But an agreement by which the North would give up its nuclear weapons and allow for the world to confirm it still seems far off.

The United States has reached aid-for-disarmament deals with North Korea before, but they've ultimately failed.

Recent comments from the leaders of the two Koreas have raised hopes. Trump's supporters on Capitol Hill are pushing the idea that he deserves a Nobel, and Trump clearly enjoyed it Saturday when supporters at a Michigan rally began chanting "Nobel" as he talked about North Korea.

The letter sent to the Nobel committee said North Korea has long ignored international demands to cease its aggressions, but Trump's "peace through strength policies are working" and bringing North Korea to the negotiating table.

It said the Trump administration united China and others in imposing strict sanctions.

"The sanctions have decimated the North Korean economy and have been largely credited for bringing North Korea to the negotiating table," the nomination letter stated.

Messer is running for the Senate in Indiana, where support for Trump has become a litmus test for Republican voters. The lawmakers who signed the letter are among the most conservative in the House. The group includes several other lawmakers who are also running for governor or senator in Republican-leaning or strongly Republican states.

Among them:
  • Marsha Blackburn, who is running for a Senate seat in Tennessee.
  • Kevin Cramer, who is running for the Senate in North Dakota.
  • Evan Jenkins, who is running for the Senate in West Virginia.
  • Jim Renacci, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio.
Diane Black, another signatory to the letter, is running for governor in Tennessee.

The Norwegian Nobel committee says it has received 330 nominations for Peace Prize consideration this year.

(CNN)President Donald Trump publicly undermined his attorney Rudy Giuliani on Friday, saying the former New York City mayor had only a loose grasp of the Stormy Daniels business when he spoke about it earlier this week.

A clarifying statement from Giuliani issued four hours later did little to illuminate the matter. Instead, the series of pronouncements only lent further confusion to an issue that has deeply undercut the administration's credibility and has fueled the impression of a West Wing in crisis.

"He''ll get his facts straight," Trump stipulated of his longtime friend on Friday morning, before adding: "There has been a lot of misinformation. I say, You know what? Learn before you speak. It's a lot easier."

Calling Giuliani a "great guy," Trump nonetheless insisted his attorney wasn't fully up to speed when he told an interviewer that Trump had reimbursed another lawyer for hush money paid to Daniels, an adult film actress who claims she had sex with Trump in 2006. Trump has denied the encounter.

"He really has his heart into it. He's working hard," Trump said of Giuliani, before adding: "He's learning the subject matter."

By midday, Giuliani had issued a statement he said was "intended to clarify the views I expressed over the past few days." But it did little to spell out when precisely Trump knew of the payment, or how involved he was in reimbursing Cohen.

"My references to timing were not describing my understanding of the President's knowledge, but instead, my understanding of these matters," Giuliani wrote.

He asserted the payment would have been made "whether he was a candidate or not."

Seeking clarity

Trump sought to clarify the matter during a pair of morning appearances as he departed for Dallas, where he will address the National Rifle Association. He spoke first outside the South Portico, as his Marine One helicopter was idling nearby, and again under the wing of Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews.

It was his first time speaking about the matter after Giuliani sat for an interview this week and claimed Trump had paid back his lawyer Michael Cohen for the $130,000 hush payment to Daniels, an adult film actress whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford.
Trump seemed to initially back up Giuliani's statement on Twitter the morning after his interview. But he reversed course on Friday.

"Everything said has been said incorrectly," he said. Giuliani, who announced he was joining Trump's legal team 15 days ago, "started yesterday," the President insisted.

"When Rudy made the statements -- Rudy is great -- but Rudy had just started, and he wasn't totally familiar with everything," he said.

Trump had previously said he wasn't aware of the payment. He told reporters aboard Air Force One a month ago "no" when questioned about his knowledge of the arrangement.

'Not changing any stories'

He grew indignant on Friday when pressed about the shifting version of events.

"We're not changing any stories," Trump demanded on the Andrews tarmac. "This country is right now running so smooth and to be bringing up that kind of crap, and bringing up witch hunts all the time, that's all you want to talk about."

As reporters interjected, Trump chided them -- "excuse me, excuse me" -- and insisted they review what he'd said.

"You take a look at what I said. You go back and take a look," he ordered. "You'll see what I said."

The remarkable series of appearances did little to clarify matters, which have served to erode the credibility both of the President and his aides, who insisted Trump knew nothing of the hush payments.

Trump, however, said there should be no confusion.

"It's actually very simple," he declared without explanation.

The matter has again plunged the President's staff and legal team into crisis mode and left them scrambling to catch up with events. There was little indication beforehand that Giuliani had planned to reveal the payment details on Wednesday night, despite his insistence that he remains aligned with his client.

"You wont see daylight between me and the President," Giuliani told CNN's Dana Bash on Thursday.

If there was a strategy cooked up between the President and his lawyer, most White House aides were left in the dark. Chief of staff John Kelly was among the aides who watched the Giuliani interview with shock on Wednesday.

Kelly's stature inside the White House has long been the subject of speculation. But Trump sought to bolster his standing on Friday.

"We have a great relationship. He's doing a great job as chief of staff. I could not be more happy," Trump said. "So I just want to tell you that."

Washington (CNN) The tornado that was Rudy Giuliani's media appearances this week -- plus personnel changes to President's Donald Trump's legal team -- may signal a drastic change in how Trump will approach his legal strategy as the Russia investigation and a probe into Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen swirl around the President.

Trump's legal team now consists of several accomplished attorneys with extremely disparate personalities. While Giuliani, who besides his political career is a former federal top prosecutor in Manhattan, captivated journalists with disclosures about Trump this week, three fresh lawyers who've shunned media attention are positioned to handle serious legal work to protect the President.
Many predict that Giuliani, as the face of the team, will seize opportunities to make news on TV and that he will be more aggressive toward special counsel Robert Mueller.

"Playing nice hasn't gotten them anywhere," a source familiar with the team said, going on to describe Giuliani as a "professional assassin."

Yet Giuliani's comments to Fox News about Trump's legal situations this week appeared to complicate the President's story. CNN reported Thursday that members of Trump's legal team -- which also includes a cluster of unofficial advisers, largely from Trump's New York social circle -- were caught by surprise when Giuliani spoke about Stormy Daniels, disclosing that Trump had reimbursed Michael Cohen for the adult film star's hush agreement.

The lack of clarity continued Friday, when Trump said Giuliani should "get his facts straight," and then the former New York mayor released a statement about what he said on Fox News, but didn't say who ultimately paid Daniels $130,000.
Other sources with knowledge of Giuliani's approach said his comments may have been planned to get ahead of the development if it were to leak. Aside from the drama of the Cohen investigation, which appears to be playing out in New York, Mueller's team and Trump's lawyers in Washington have been in talks about an interview between the special counsel and the President.

White House counsel Donald McGahn and his attorney Bill Burck, who is friends with Flood, lobbied Flood last weekend to join the President's team, according to a person familiar with the interaction. To make his case, Burck paraphrased the movie "The Dark Knight," telling Flood that he's Batman, the hero that Gotham -- the country -- deserves, this person said.

Flood leaves his law firm Williams & Connolly, among Washington's most elite trial powerhouses and which still represent the Clintons, to take the job. As of Friday -- two days into Giuliani's coup -- it wasn't clear whether Flood had started working at the White House yet.

A Chicagoan who early in his career taught high school English, Flood is a "tightly wrapped " individual who "couldn't get any further away from Trump's personality," according to a source familiar with the situation. Flood and his former law firm have been notoriously silent in response to media inquiries for years, and he did not respond to requests for comment this week.

Flood also served in a role similar to the position he's in now during George W. Bush's administration. In that role, he directed the White House's response to investigations.

John Dowd exiting and the husband-and-wife duo of Victoria Toensing and Joe DiGenova never securing the job. Sekulow added Giuliani and now may step back, according to sources familiar with the team.

Martin and Jane Raskin of Coral Gables, Florida, signed on to Trump's personal legal team about two weeks ago.

The Raskins, brought aboard after several top Washington lawyers turned down working for Trump, couldn't be more different from Giuliani. "They're not grandstanders," Sale said. Another Florida white collar lawyer who knows both the Raskins and Giuliani described the couple similarly, as "not showboats."

"You're not going to hear speeches about the government being crazy from them," the lawyer said.

Still, Giuliani will likely work closely with the Raskins, who are well-respected especially among Florida lawyers for their criminal defense work.

"Behind the scenes, anybody as smart as Rudy knows you need to brainstorm with other people on your team and make it a collaborative effort," Sale said.

The Raskins have specialized in criminal defense, primarily in Florida federal court, for years. They've cut plea deals for clients, defended people caught in conspiracy and fraud investigations, and run their own firm out of Coral Gables, almost two hours south of Mar-a-Lago, where they met with Trump last month, according to The Washington Post. Jane Raskin worked decades ago with Mueller and with James Quarles, a prosecutor negotiating the interview with Trump.

"One thing about the Raskins is they're very easy to work with," said the lawyer who's friendly with them, declining to give his name or law firm.
