An unattended cooking pot that caught fire is being blamed for a fire Wednesday night that forced the evacuation of about 150 people from a Gatineau high-rise apartment building.

Firefighters were called to the building at 175 Mutchmore St. at about 7:30 p.m. after flames were reported in a 17th-floor apartment.

Residents had managed to control the flames with a household extinguisher, but firefighters helped evacuate the high-rise as a precaution.

A resident of the apartment was treated for minor burns.

Damages were estimated at $20,000 and two residents have been displaced.

Firefighters again urged people to exercise caution in the kitchen, noting that 20 per cent of all calls to residential fires involve kitchen mishaps, the equivalent of about one fire per week in Gatineau.
