A Minnesota man who raced vintage boats was killed while competing at a regatta in Rideau Ferry.

Bill Pearson, 69, was critically injured Saturday afternoon when his vintage hydroplane boat “became airborne,” provincial police said. Officers from the Lanark County OPP detachment responded to the crash that occurred during the Rideau Ferry Regatta around 2 p.m. Vintage vessels were scheduled to race until 5 p.m.

Pearson, from Lakeville, Minn., was ejected from the boat. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Boats competing in races reach speeds well over 160 km/h, according to the regatta’s website.

The Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta expressed their ” deepest condolences” to Pearson’s family, friends in the vintage racing community and to the organizers of the Rideau Ferry Regatta. Pearson had raced in the Wheeling, W.V., regatta in 2008.

Organizers from the Rideau Ferry Regatta, where the collision occurred, could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Police said an autopsy was pending.
