The Ottawa police robbery unit fears there may be more victims who haven’t come forward after laying charges against four teens in a string of violent, swarming-style robberies in which the targets were abducted.
In one of the three incidents, the victim reported being forced to commit a robbery; in another, the victim was dumped with stab wounds.
Police are asking any other victims of robberies – especially recent incidents involving a silver, four-door Honda Accord – to contact the robbery unit.
The first incident was July 22, when a youth arranged to meet a male at the South Keys Plaza but instead was confronted by four males who told him to get in their car and then drove him behind the shopping centre and around the city’s south end. He was robbed of his phone and cash and repeatedly assaulted, police said. His captors dumped him in a secluded area off Rideau Road, where he flagged down a passing car for help.
Just after midnight on Aug. 3, police responded to a convenience store on Pleasant Park Road near St. Laurent Boulevard after a robber, a man armed with a knife, had fled to a waiting vehicle with cash and cigarettes.
Soon after, the robbery suspect called police himself from the area of Hunt Club and Hawthorne roads. He was arrested but told police he’d been approached by three males in a vehicle as he left work in the Findlay Creek area at about 10 p.m. They told him to get in the car and “compelled” him to commit the robbery. Afterwards, the trio took the take from the robbery and dropped the victim on Hawthorne Road. He had cuts from a knife and was released without charge pending an investigation.
On Aug. 7, between 11 p.m. and midnight, a third victim encountered three suspects in a parked car near a baseball diamond on Lorry Greenberg Drive. He was assaulted, choked, robbed of his phone and stabbed in the leg before being left near Bank Street and Queensdale Avenue. He went to the hospital where he was treated for the stab wound and later released.
Police said they’ve now laid charges in all three incidents.
A 16-year-old Ottawa youth arrested Aug. 8 is charged in all three incidents. He faces charges including overcoming resistance by rendering a victim unconscious, three counts of kidnapping, four counts of robbery, three counts of conspiracy, three counts of forcible confinement, two counts of possession of a weapon, two counts of assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and breach of undertaking. He appears in court Aug. 29.
On Aug. 10, investigators tracked down the suspects’ car and arrested the driver, who was also charged in all three incidents.
Mohamad Othman, 18, is charged with overcoming resistance by rendering a victim unconscious, three counts of kidnapping, four counts of robbery, three counts of conspiracy, three counts of forcible confinement and two counts of possession of a weapon. He’s in custody awaiting an Aug. 23 court appearance.
On Monday, two teens, aged 14 and 16, turned themselves in at the Elgin Street police station.
They’re charged with robbery, kidnapping, forcible confinement and conspiracy in the July 22 incident. The 14-year-old is also charged with overcoming resistance by rendering a victim unconscious and breach of probation.
The 14-year-old is in custody pending an Aug. 24 court appearance. The 16-year-old was released and appears in court Sept. 6.
Staff Sgt. Michael Haarbosch of the robbery unit said that at least two of the three robberies were not random encounters, with the relationship between the victims and suspects still part of the ongoing investigation.
A third suspect has yet to be identified in each of the Aug. 3 and Aug. 7 incidents but it’s not yet clear if it is the same person, Haarbosch said. Investigators are still tracking down surveillance video evidence of the three crimes.
Police are concerned there are more victims because they’ve recovered cellphones whose owners can’t be identified.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa Police’s robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.
