I have a friend who wants to have a baby recently. She is Permanent Resident and just starts to work. How many hours should she work so that she can have the one-year maternity "leave" and "pay benefit" from Government.

p.s. She is a temp-hired employee and she pays tax.

thanks

600 Hours.
But the one year is not for maternity leave.
Maternity leave is 15 weeks, and Parental leave is 35 weeks.
Maternity leave can be taken as early as 8 weeks before Due day.
Parental leave can be taken any time within the first year after her baby is born, and can be taken by eitheir new mother or new father.

thank you very much. But as I mentioned, she is just a "temp" employee, is it still applicable to her?
Or I should say it has nothing to do with "your employer" as long as one pays tax, she/he gets this benefit from Canada Gov? Thanks!

It is beter to call HRDC to ask them

Yes, as long as the 'hours" is OK.

The employer has to provide "ROE"( Record of Employment").
Ask for ROE as soon as possible.

If you have to pay "tax", doesn't it mean that the employer has "ROE" for you?! Thanks...

So it means within her "600-hours" work, if she pays "EI", she can then get one-year parental leave benefit paied by the Gov. Right?!
BTW, how much can she get per month say if she earns $2000/per month for her temp work now.

thnanks

Is paying EI compulsory , isn't it?

How much you can get depends on partly how much you paid for your EI, and also depends on the employer. for example, NRC will compensate you until you reach 93%of your salary.
You can phone HRDC for details.

People working with contract may not have their EI paid nor tax deducted by the employer.

What do you mean le...?! My friend told me she has to pay "tax"(even she works as a temp employee), doesn't it mean she has "EI"?

Tax deduction does not neccessarily mean EI is paid.
Check the pay stub and see if there is any indication of EI deduction.

I just checked it with her and she told me "Yes, she paid EI also". So does it mean she can have a baby after she works for 600 hours?:) Thanks...
