Ontario’s police watchdog has ruled there are no grounds for criminal charges against Ontario Provincial Police officers connected to a case in which a 26-year-old man shot himself inside a residence in Bancroft, about 200 kilometres west of Ottawa.
On April 25, 2016, the OPP executed a search warrant at the home in an attempt to catch a man wanted in connection with an earlier incident.
When officers entered the residence they found the man dead of self-inflicted gunshots.
The SIU — an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving the police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault — was called in to investigate.
SIU director Tony Loparco’s report to the Attorney General said the investigation concluded the man’s death was “not due to lack of effort or level of care” on the part of the police.
