Ottawa police were investigating a “criminal offence” in the the area of Somerset and Bell streets late Saturday night, a spokesman said.
The area bounded by Somerset West, Booth Street, Willow Street and Bell Street was closed to motorists and pedestrians, a news release stated. The roads were reopened at 11:27 p.m.
No arrests had been made at of 11:15 and there were no injuries, police said.
Irene Gyurcsak, who lives on the second floor of an apartment building at 762 Somerset St. W., said she counted about 18 cruisers on the scene and about four canine units.
“I opened the front door of my apartment and there was a cop standing there with a machine gun,” Gyurcsak said. “He asked me to go back inside and lock my door.”
Gyurcsak said her husband attempted to enter the apartment building and use the elevator during the incident, but was met by armed police officers and told to leave the building.
She said it appeared a door on her floor had been “jammed in” or “raided.”
