The granting of Freedom of the City by a municipality is one of the most esteemed honours to bestow on a military unit. But how does the military feel about the recognition? As you’d probably guess, they’re honoured and appreciative.

For Parade Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Jackson, Commanding Officer of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own), the honour is extra special.

“For me personally, being asked to be the Parade Commander and having my Regimental Sergeant Major, Chief Warrant Officer Michael Lever, appointed as the Parade Sergeant-Major, and having the privilege of leading a number of distinguished Canadian Armed Forces units and Cadet Corps is an incredible honour,” explained Lieutenant-Colonel Jackson.

In fact, given the historic relationship with Ottawa, Freedom of the City carries special significance for Lieutenant-Colonel Jackson.

“The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (Duke of Edinburgh's Own), are the City's Official Regiment,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Jackson. “As such, we have always had a special attachment with the City and the various communities that make up our spectacular National Capital. I look forward to seeing residents, visitors and dignitaries here watching us march with pride and bayonets fixed. An opportunity to exercise this special privilege from our City does not come too often, and I know that the current generation of Cameron Highlanders, along with all members present on parade, will be just as proud as those who marched during their Unit’s first parade back in 1969.”

The Cameron Highlanders will be joined by 17 other military and three cadet units on parade Saturday morning.

Marc Moo Sang, Chief of Staff and 51 Canada Aviation and Space Museum Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, were granted Freedom of the City in 2016, and his unit will also be participating.

“It was a great honour to be awarded Freedom of the City, especially upon reaching our 75th anniversary,” said Moo Sang. “We appreciated the formal recognition from the City of Ottawa. It reinforced that our youth organisation had been doing and continues to do good work within the community in helping to train and develop future leaders by providing them life skills.”

Moo Sang was pleased to see his cadets recognized in their own community.

“To be invited back again to march today shows the City respects both our cadet group and the Freedom of the City honour and it validates the work we do nurturing the City’s future leaders,” Moo Sang added.

Check out the full joint exercising of Freedom of the City Ceremony on Saturday, September 16 at 9 a.m. at Ottawa City Hall. The event will take place in front of the Heritage Building on Elgin Street.
