Mayor Jim Watson and the City of Ottawa feted its local military history by hosting Ottawa’s first full joint exercising of Freedom of the City.
The City invited back all 18 military and three cadet units that had previously been granted Freedom of the City to exercise their right and parade as one, with Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Jackson, Commanding Officer, The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own) as Commander of the Parade.
The granting of Freedom of the City by a municipality is one of the most esteemed honours to bestow on a military unit. This symbolic designation allows the unit to, “march through the street with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.”
The first unit to ever be granted Freedom of the City in Ottawa was to the 14th Battalion, The Princess of Wales Own Rifles by then Mayor, George Cox. The most recent unit to be granted the honour was 2784 Governor General’s Foot Guards Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps by Mayor Jim Watson.
Quotes
“As we continue to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial, it is important to also recognize the contributions of our military. Our first-ever full joint exercising of the Freedom of the City is a symbolic way for us to demonstrate our trust and gratitude to our men and women in uniform who represent Ottawa, and Canada, with pride and honour. We are forever grateful to each of them for answering the call to duty.”
Mayor Jim Watson
“The Canadian Armed Forces appreciates the continued support of the City of Ottawa and its residents. It is a privilege for a military unit to be granted Freedom of the City. The Canadian Army is honoured to be part of the first joint exercising of the Freedom of the City of Ottawa alongside the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and cadet units.”
Lieutenant-General Paul F. Wynnyk, Commander of the Canadian Army
