An Ottawa woman who became a champion for organ donations after undergoing two kidney transplants, has died after a tree fell on her during a violent thunderstorm last week.
Hiba Yusuf, 37, was walking on the grounds of The Ottawa Hospital’s General campus on Sept. 27 when she was struck by a falling tree.
Her friend Fatima Mahfoudhi said Yusuf had been taking a popular path from a bus stop to the hospital when she was hit. She was not discovered until after the storm had passed, Mahfoudhi said, when a hospital employee went out to survey the damage.
Yusuf was airlifted to the hospital’s Civic campus, the regional trauma centre, where she was in intensive care until her death on Saturday night.
Yusuf, who had chronic kidney disease, received a donor kidney from her brother in 2001. In 2012, after the first transplant kidney had failed, she underwent a second transplant — this time from a deceased donor.
Mahfoudhi said her friend was often in pain as a result of her kidney disease and the transplant surgeries, but never let that stand in the way of helping others.
“She would always put everyone ahead of her. She was just that kind of person.”
Mahfoudhi said Yusuf was always encouraging people to sign donor cards. She was a member of the Muslim advisory panel at the multi-organ transplant program at Toronto’s University Health Network.
Her experiences also informed the kind of research she did. Yusuf was a graduate student at the University of Ottawa studying the causes and treatment of kidney disease.
Mahfoudhi said Yusuf, who was single, dedicated her life to her studies, her research and her friends.
“She just had such a positive attitude all the time. She was such a beautiful person. I can’t believe she is gone.”
Her funeral was held on Sunday.
