Ottawa police raided the Dr. Greenthumb marijuana dispensary on Montreal Road Tuesday, the same day they made a sweep of the Cannabis Culture shop on Bank Street.

A total of six men and two women were arrested during the two raids and charged with a variety of offences, including drug trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime.

Police also say they raided several outdoor marijuana grow-ops across the city, seizing 1,200 pounds of marijuana plants.

The raids appear to be part of a renewed crackdown on the city’s illegal pot shops. Last month, Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi warned that illegal dispensaries in Ontario will be shut down. The province plans to sell recreational pot at stores run by the LCBO. The federal government has pledged to legalize recreational pot by July 2018.

“The provincial government has made it clear that independent storefronts will not be part of a legal framework in Ontario,” said Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Rick Carey of the drug unit in a news release. “These storefronts are now and will continue to be illegal operations and property owners need to be aware that they could face serious repercussions for allowing them to continue to operate. We will continue to investigate dispensaries as complaints come forward.”

Dr. Greenthumb opened last summer in a small strip mall, adjoining a Subway outlet. Staff there boasted of having the cheapest prices of any dispensary for dried weed.

Police have conducted 19 raids on dispensaries in the last year. Some have simply reopened, including Cannabis Culture, which was raided in March and opened a day later. The store, however, did not open Wednesday morning after Tuesday’s raid.

Anyone with information regarding drug complaints is encouraged to contact the Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222 ext. 7300. Reports can also be made online at Ottawapolice.ca.
