An explosion and fire in a ground-floor apartment caused an estimated $85,600 in damage to an apartment building in Gatineau on Monday evening.
The Gatineau Fire Service said the building at 23 rue de la Sœur Jeanne-Marie Chavoin was almost completely evacuated of approximately 400 individuals when crews arrived shortly after 8 p.m.
The blaze was quickly extinguished and damage was limited to the apartment where the explosion and fire had occurred. There was no smoke damage to upper floors of the building, a media release said.
Only one resident was displaced by the fire, and the investigation had been turned over to the Gatineau Police Service, the release added.
