America is dedicated to protecting the freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment to the Constitution, while respecting citizens’ equality before the law. None of these freedoms is absolute. Compelling governmental interests can at times trump fundamental civil liberties, but sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) laws do not pass this test. Rather, they trample First Amendment rights and unnecessarily impinge on citizens’ right to run their local schools, charities, and businesses in ways consistent with their values. SOGI laws do not protect equality before the law; instead, they grant special privileges that are enforceable against private actors.

SOGI laws could also have serious unintended consequences. These laws tend to be vague and overly broad, lacking clear definitions of what discrimination on the basis of “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” mean and what conduct can and cannot be penalized. These laws would impose ruinous liability on innocent citizens for alleged “discrimination” based on subjective and unverifiable identities, not on objective traits. SOGI laws would further increase government interference in markets, potentially discouraging economic growth and job creation. With regard to “gender identity” and “transgender” teachers, students, and employees, SOGI laws could require education and employment policies concerning schoolhouse, locker room, and workplace conditions that undermine common sense.

SOGI laws threaten the freedom of citizens, individually and in associations, to affirm their religious or moral convictions—convictions such as that marriage is the union of one man and one woman or that maleness and femaleness are objective biological realities to be valued and affirmed, not rejected or altered. Under SOGI laws, acting on these beliefs in a commercial or educational context could be actionable discrimination. These are the laws that have been used to penalize bakers, florists, photographers, schools, and adoption agencies when they declined to act against their convictions concerning marriage and sexuality.[1] They do not adequately protect religious liberty or freedom of speech.

ARC Foundation introduces SOGI 1 2 3

SOGI 1 2 3 is a collaboration between ARC Foundation, BC Ministry of Education, BC Teachers' Federation, UBC Faculty of Education, Out in Schools, nine school districts across BC, and local, national and international LGBTQ community organizations. We are working together to address the immediate need to support marginalized LGBTQ students by affecting rapid and progressive change in attitudes, policies, and practices toward creating safer and more inclusive school environments for all students.

The primary platform for SOGI 1 2 3 is SOGIeducation.org, a website that shares proven, ready-to-use tools and resources created by educators, for educators.

“86% of educators estimate that at least 25% of schools in their district have created individual SOGI action plans, compared to 0% of schools in October 2016
SOGI 1 2 3 has three phases which have clear outcomes and tools for educators to make their schools and classrooms LGBTQ-inclusive:

BC SOGI Educator Network
The BC SOGI Educator Network brings together BC educators interested in SOGI-inclusive education. It enables these educators to meet, share resources, co-design programs, and collectively overcome obstacles within and across districts. District-level members gain access to an expansive collection of emerging SOGI tools to test and evolve with their schools. Key tools are then shared publicly and with all members.

The BC SOGI Educator Network was formally launched as a pilot project at the beginning of the 2016/2017 year by ARC Foundation and nine BC school districts: Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Langley, Delta, Sea to Sky, Nanaimo-Ladysmith, and Kamloops/Thompson.

ARC Foundation is pleased to announce that the Network is open to all BC school districts and independent schools in 2017/2018. For further information and to register your interest, please visit SOGI 1 2 3.

Backgrounder: SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity)

May 4, 2017 – This is a special note to all parents: There is an active agenda within BC schools (And across Canada and the USA) to undermine your relationship with your children, undermine societal values and to sexualize your children. Your children are being used as political pawns. One of these programs is called SOGI, it is designed to create societal disruption.

Homosexuality and gender deviancy is nothing new. History provides us with examples of what happens when sex activism is allowed to flourish. Without exception, there comes a point, usually because of the health, medical and social costs and consequences, where the pendulum swings back, and reason prevails. The time is now to end the insanity.

Your child’s school has now been ordered to comply with the sex activists agenda. Teachers can no longer refer to children as “boys and girls”. To do so would be “to impose a binary gender assignment” that violates the sex activists’ view of how children should be raised. When talking about families, teachers are prohibited from using the terms “mom” and “dad,” and are instead directed to refer to your role simply “parent” or “guardian.” The new directives do not stop there. Get informed!

Other changes you need to be aware of. Your child’s school bathroom can now be used by gender deviants. Men/boys dressed up as—or “identify” as women/girls—can now use your daughter’s school change room, access the girls/womans change facilities at your local recreation centre or community swimming pool…as a few examples. Churches, Mosques, Synagogues and daycares are now prohibited from “discriminating” against those who claim to “identify” differently from their birth identity as male or female.
