Ottawa-Gatineau got walloped with water this week — and it’s not over yet.

Environment Canada has issued a “special weather statement” that significant rainfall of up to 40 mm is possible later in the weekend as a low pressure system developing over the western U.S. moves toward southern Ontario.

“Appreciable amounts of rain are likely in many areas especially on Sunday and Sunday night,” said the statement.

“Given the fairly recent rain across Eastern Ontario, where regions are more susceptible to heavier rainfall issues, this statement serves as an early alert for potentially significant rain. Rainfall amounts of 25 to possibly 40 mm are possible.”

To compare, there was 39 mm of rain last Sunday and another 56 mm on Monday, a state of affairs that added up to flooded streets and basements, culverts that got swept away and a trailer park that had to be evacuated in Gatineau.

Environment Canada’s statement covers both Ottawa north, which includes Kanata and Orléans and Ottawa south, which includes Richmond and Metcalfe.

Meanwhile there’s the possibility of rain showers or snow flurries Saturday afternoon and overnight.
