An 83-year-old South Algonquin Township man drowned Monday when he fell through the ice at a family pond.
The victim was identified as John Johnson, of South Algonquin Township.
Police were called to the scene at about 5:11 p.m. when the victim’s family reported they had found his hat on the ice surface and were concerned that he had fallen through into the water.
The body was recovered a short time later, and responders performed CPR before transporting the victim to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem exam confirmed the cause of death as accidental drowning.
South Algonquin Twp is about 240 kilometres west of Ottawa.
