A convenience store clerk was taken to hospital Wednesday night after robbers sprayed him with a substance like bear repellent so they could grab cash and smokes.

It happened at about 10:20 p.m. at a store on Montreal Road near St. Laurent Boulevard.

Two men, both disguised, walked into the store and immediately sprayed and incapacitated the clerk.

They grabbed the items and fled.

A witness outside the store spotted the suspects as they left the store and called 911, Staff Sgt. Michael Haarbosch said.

The clerk treated and released.

They’re described as black men, 20 to 30 years old, about six feet tall and with slim builds. They wore dark clothing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116.

Anonymous tips can be submitted by made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa police app.
