Ottawa police were canvassing residents in a downtown neighbourhood Sunday after a man posed as a gas meter inspector in order to gain access to a woman’s residence on Friday.
The incident, which police are investigating as a sexual assault, happened in the area near Wiggins Private and Chapel Street around 1 p.m. Now they are trying to gather more information on the man, who they said had been carrying a clipboard when he knocked on the woman’s door and identified himself as a meter inspector.
Many neighbours of apartment buildings and row houses in the area, had not previously heard about the incident, but were disturbed to hear about the assault.
“That’s pretty disgusting and he needs to be put away,” Chantal Pilote said. “Nobody has knocked on my door. Police haven’t come by … I have four dogs, so, if anything goes on, he is not coming in.”
Mona Souaiby, 60, has lived on Wiggins Private with her daughter and husband for 16 years and often hears noise in her building. Normally, she said, should would receive written advance notice if someone was coming to check on a gas meter or repair something, so she would never open her door to a stranger.
“I don’t speak with anybody, and, even if I hear something, I call security,” Souaiby said.
The suspect is described as Caucasian in his early 50s standing between five feet seven inches and five feet 10 inches tall, clean-shaven with thick, black eyebrows and a hooked nose. He spoke French and wore a black jacket, a black tuque with pompoms, dark pants and beige work boots.
Police expressed concern that may have been attempts to gain entrance into other homes as well.
