An Ottawa family was temporarily forced out of their row home on Tuesday when a fire broke out in a neighbouring unit in an east-end neighbourhood, several blocks from The Ottawa Hospital’s General campus.
Ottawa Fire Services received the 911 call at 2:08 p.m. when residents of 1767 Russell Rd. near St. Laurent Boulevard reported that white smoke was visible from inside the basement of their unit. First responders on the scene confirmed the presence of a haze and odour, said fire services. The family had already evacuated the home.
Upon further investigation, crews instead located a fire in a unit adjacent to the residents who called, which they soon got under control. The blaze, which started in a mattress on the second floor, was extinguished by 2:44 p.m.
There were no injuries to report.
Investigators were still looking into the cause of the fire.
