Ontario Provincial Police officers have charged a Perth man with theft after tracking the trail of a suitcase he was dragging through the snow back to an alleged crime scene.

Police said officers noticed a man pulling a purple suitcase through the snow along a street at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

They stopped to talk to the man, who offered few explanations about what he was doing with the suitcase in the snow at the late hour.

The officers followed the suitcase’s impressions back to a location nearby along Rogers Road where a business vehicle had allegedly been broken into and a masonry power saw had been taken.

Police say they found the power saw inside the suitcase.

Charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime is Tyler Johnston, 22, of Perth.

Johnston was released and is to appear in a Perth court at a later date.
