With a frostbite advisory in effect, the Bell Capital Cup has moved some Wednesday games from Parliament Hill to indoor rinks.
“We spoke with all of the teams involved in games on the Canada 150 Rink for today,” general manager Scott Lawryk said in an e-mail Wednesday morning as the event featuring 32 teams of young players aged nine to 12 from across the country got underway.
“In consultation with them, some games were moved indoors, while some are going ahead as scheduled. While we didn’t want to take away the once in a lifetime opportunity, safety is obviously a concern. We didn’t want to make any decisions without talking with the teams.”
Some games were scheduled for the outdoor rink created on Parliament Hill as part of Canada 150 celebrations.
It was a frigid -24 C Wednesday morning and Ottawa Public Health had a frostbite advisory in effect “until further notice.” Double-digit lows are expected throughout the hockey event, which wraps up Dec. 31.
Organizers are also bringing heaters on site to raise the temperature on the benches, Lawryk said.
The Ottawa International Hockey Festival, known as the Bell Capital Cup, included a “Hockey on the Hill” contest bringing boys and girls teams representing every province.
Organizers say the Bell Cup is one of the world’s premier atom and peewee hockey tournaments. It includes more than 650 games on 24 different ice pads. Admission is free for all games. For more information: www.bellcapitalcup.ca.
