More than 1,400 rides for holiday partiers were provided by volunteers in the 2017 edition of Opération Nez Rouge (Red Nose) Outaouais, the organization has announced.
Some 1,170 volunteers signed up to provide lifts to people headed across the region, including parts of Ottawa.
Users donated a total of $34,000 for their lifts over the 13 service evenings between Dec. 1 to 31.
The money went to the Outaouais Quebec Student Sport Network, which offers sports and health programs in the region’s five school boards and private schools.
Both the number of lifts and the donations were down from 2016, when 1,900 people took the service home and donated about $43,000.
Nez Rouge spokesperson Danielle Legault noted the service began service in November in the 2016 holiday season. In addition, the region’s deep freeze had a negative effect on the number of partiers out on the town.
Nationally, Operation Red Nose programs in dozens of communities provided 71,430 rides in 2017.
Operation Red Nose has not had an Ottawa-based operation since the 2014 holiday season because no local organization has stepped forward to co-ordinate the initiative.
