It’s a messy one out there.
Environment Canada’s freezing rain warning remained in effect Thursday morning leading to cancelled school buses across the region, power outages east of the city and some traffic-snarling collisions.
Meanwhile, the agency has also issued a special weather statement alerting that mild and wet conditions could lead to pooling water before a cold front sweeps through bringing potentially “significant” amounts of snow.
Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) and Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) have both taken school buses off icy roads.
Hydro One is reporting that more than 2,000 customers are without power east of Ottawa in a swath stretching south of Wendover. Hydro Ottawa reports that 56 customers in Innes Ward were without power.
While there were no reporterd hydro problems in Ottawa in the early going, a substation problem in Kingston has left more than 5,000 customers without power. Kingston Utilities estimates the problem should be fixed by noon.
The City of Ottawa’s traffic centre, meanwhile, reported a string of snarls including a crash on Highway 417 westbound at Castlefrank in Kanata that left the two right lanes and the right shoulder blocked.
“Blame it on the rain” slowdowns/rollovers/collisions – can be attributed to rain but…motorists play a part too. Plz drive to match today’s slippery conditions. EXTRA braking space. Applying brakes smoothly/slowly. Lights on! Give pedestrians & winter cyclists space #otttraffic pic.twitter.com/16aGImzF6G
