A fundraising effort is now underway after staff at the Parkdale Food Centre arrived at work Tuesday ready to serve up a warming breakfast and instead saw a chilling sight – four slashed tires on their “Reverse Food Truck.”
The vandalism happened some time between Saturday afternoon and Tuesday morning – when a volunteer arrived to pick up a van full of produce – and will cost $1,000 to fix, the food centre reported on social media.
The truck is so named because it picks up donations – items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, healthy non-perishables and personal hygiene items – rather than dishing out fast food.
“Unfortunately, that money will likely have to come from our operations budget, the money we use to run food programs that feed both our neighbours body and soul,” the Rosemount Avenue agency said, asking that anyone who knows what happened to call 613-722-8019.
Donations can be made at the food centre’s website.
Marc Messier, a fire prevention and investigation officer with Ottawa Fire Services, challenged “all those who can afford to put a meal on their table every night” to match his donation to the food centre to help repair the truck.
So sad to find our Reverse Food truck this morning with 4 tires slashed! Towing & repair will cost money budgeted for food. @OttawaPolice pic.twitter.com/LuunXGn7BZ
