This week’s cold snap means that the Rideau Canal will be back open to skaters — all 7.8 km of it — starting at noon Thursday.
While the wake-up temperature was -17 C that felt more like -28, Thursday’s forecast is for perfect skating weather with mainly sunny skies, a high of -9 C and a low of -12 C.

For Friday, expect a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -4 C.
The ice might start getting choppy Saturday with a high of 5 C that comes along with a 40 per cent chance of showers and a low of 0 C.
Sunday’s high is 2 C with a 40 per cent chance of showers or flurries then it’s back in the freezer with an overnight low of -11 C.
Monday’s forecast is for cloudy skies, a 30 per cent chance of flurries, a high of -8 C and a low of -20 C.
For Tuesday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a high of -11 C and a low of -15 C.
It’s still almost a week out but the early word for Wednesday is warmer with a forecast high of -2 C and a 40 per cent chance of flurries.
