An Ottawa police constable couldn’t believe his eyes after a driver and passenger in the same vehicle swapped seats while allegedly speeding at 121 km/h on Limebank Road Wednesday.
Const. Phil Kane said he was patrolling traffic when he saw a GMC pickup truck speeding northbound on the 80-kilometre per hour stretch of Limebank Road, just south of River Road.
Kane said it would have been a routine traffic stop — until he saw the driver and a passenger switch spots while allegedly travelling at 100 km/h. As the first driver scrambled out of his seat, Kane said the truck swerved from the right lane to the left lane and back.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Kane in a phone interview. “I had to check again to make sure I actually saw that.”
After Kane stopped them, the three people in the truck refused to explain why the driver and passenger changed seats.
The first driver, a man, was charged with speeding, careless driving, not wearing a seatbelt, misuse of plates, not using two license plates and driving while disqualified, which is a criminal charge.
The passenger-turned-driver, a woman, was also charged with careless driving, not wearing a seatbelt and misuse of plates.
The truck was impounded for 45 days, and the man was to appear in court in March.
