After Wednesday’s delivery of white stuff, Mother Nature is throwing every kind of weather at us Thursday, capping the good times off with possible snow squalls later this afternoon or evening.

The Capital awoke to -9 C but the mercury is on the way to a forecast 3 C with a mix of sun and cloud and a 30 per cent chance of flurries – or rain – around noon.

Then flurries move in, at times heavy and totalling about 2 cm as southwest winds at 20 km/h gusting to 40 km/h this afternoon turn northwesterly at 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h.

Hence, Environment Canada’s heads-up that a “brief but intense snow squall” may appear as a cold front passes through Eastern Ontario late Thursday afternoon or early evening.

“Within the snow squall, visibility may be suddenly reduced in a burst of heavy snow and blowing snow,” the weather agency warned.

While it will likely pass quickly after dropping just a few centimetres of snow, “travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather.”

This after Wednesday afternoon’s 5.2 cm of snow wreaked commuter chaos.

This new batch of flurries is forecast to end by early Thursday evening – although there’s a 30 per cent chance of a few more.

Then, we can expect northwest winds at 20 km/h gusting to 40 as the mercury drops to -20 C. With the wind, it’s expected to feel like -29.

As Winterlude officially opens Friday, it will feel even colder, with a forecast windchill “feels like” of -30, even as the high rises to -15 C under mixed skies.

The overnight low is a forecast -18 C.

For Saturday, expect clouds, a 60 per cent chance of snow and a high of -6 C.

As the temperature drops to -22 C overnight, the risk of snow rises to 70 per cent overnight and into Sunday, when the forecast high is -12 C and low is -21 C.

For Monday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a high of -9 C and a low of -15 C with a 40 per cent chance of overnight flurries.

Tuesday’s forecast is for clouds, a 40 per cent chance of flurries by day and 60 per cent overnight, and a high of -8 C and low of -13 C.
