Ottawa Fire Services have declared a second alarm for a smoky fire at a high-rise building at 2201 Riverside Dr. near the Billings Bridge shopping mall.
Firefighters were called at about 11 a.m. by several residents on the building’s 21st floor reporting heavy smoke in the hallways.
Some residents were told to go to their balconies for safety to await firefighters.
Reports from the scene indicate the building’s elevators had shut down, and firefighters had to climb to the fire scene on the stairs, lugging all their heavy equipment.
There were reports the firefighters were moving heavy dry chemical extinguishers and oxygen tanks up the stairs to the fire site to battle the fire and help stranded residents.
The fire was declared under control by about 11:25, but smoke remained and firefighters were busy assisting residents.
