Gatineau police laid down the law against carpool scofflaws Wednesday morning with an enforcement blitz along Alexandre-Taché Boulevard in the Hull sector.

The lane is reserved for high-occupancy vehicles like buses, taxis or other vehicles with three or more people in them.

Police intercepted a total of 62 vehicles between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.

The minimum penalty for driving in a reserved lane is $175 in addition to administrative costs.

A dozen additional tickets were issued to the drivers who were pulled over for other violations of the Highway Traffic Act, including one ticket given to a driver who had a four-year-old child travelling in the vehicle without a booster seat or a seat belt.

Gatineau police reminded drivers to respect the carpool and said other such blitzes would be taking place in the days ahead.
