About 130 skiers had to rescued from a broken chairlift at Camp Fortune on Saturday afternoon.

Marketing manager Erin Boucher said the “Pineault quad” suddenly malfunctioned at about noon, leaving the skiers stranded on the four-seater lifts, one of seven at the Chelsea facility.

Because there was a problem with the gear box, the so-called “evacuation motor” — normally used in cases of lift mechanical problems — could not kick in to move the chairs and disembark the skiers. Instead, three or four teams of rescuers used ropes and special harnesses to manually lower the skiers to the ground.

The process took about two hours.

No one was hurt, Boucher said, though there were a couple of anxious moments for younger skiers. It was probably the first time in 20 years a manual evacuation had to be done, Boucher said.

A service team is to arrive Sunday morning to inspect the gear box but Boucher predicted it might take days to repair. Fortunately, a second lift that services the same hills is operational. All 16 runs continue to be open for March break skiers.
