A Gatineau man is dead after a car driving the wrong way down Highway 148 collided head-on with another vehicle near Lochaber, Que. early Saturday morning.
A Sûreté du Québec spokesman said a 26-year-old woman from Thurso was driving eastbound in the wrong lane on the highway around 3 a.m., when she collided with a car heading westbound.
The driver of the westbound car, a 29-year-old man from Gatineau, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, a 28-year-old man, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue the female driver from her car. She suffered “major injuries” and was taken to hospital, where she was expected to survive.
The road was closed near Chemin Pagé and Montée Berndt — about 60 kilometres east of Ottawa — while police investigated.
Police said they are waiting for the female driver to recover in hospital to determine the cause of the crash. No charges have yet been laid in the case.
