The City celebrated the 100th anniversary of Canada's first Francophone Scout troop in Canada as Mayor Jim Watson hosted members of Ottawa’s francophone community this morning at City Hall for the 12th Annual Francophone Rendezvous with the Mayor.

The troop, 1re Notre-Dame, from Ottawa, was the first francophone Scout troop in Canada. Scouting has provided a fun learning environment for thousands of kids since its inception in 1908 and has had a positive impact on youth in Ottawa.

In fact, scouting continues to nurture and grow future leaders. Within the « District des Trois-Rives de l’Association des Scouts du Canada », there are five Francophone Scout troops here in Ottawa:

  • Le Groupe 43e Franco-Ouest
  • Le Groupe 31e Saint-Joseph (Orléans)
  • Le Groupe 23e Marie-Médiatrice (Vanier)
  • Le Groupe 55e Sainte-Marie (Orléans)
  • Le Groupe 62e Phare Est (Cyrville)

The « District des Trois-Rives » encompasses the Outaouais region in Québec, Eastern and Southern Ontario. The Groupe 62e Phare Est has the highest membership of the Association des scouts du Canada outside of Québec with 78 members.

The Francophone Rendezvous provides the Mayor and City staff with an opportunity to meet with francophone leaders and residents, highlight francophone municipal supports and services to the community and celebrate Ottawa's francophone culture.

Quote

“As a City, we are blessed to have so much diversity. Our francophone community has a rich cultural heritage that has helped shape Ottawa. We are proud that the first francophone Scout troop in Canada originated here and that francophone Scout troops continue to flourish here in Ottawa. They help develop tomorrow's community leaders."

- Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa
