The City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultations on six separate proposals to name:
Gabriela Dabrowski Tennis Courts (Ward 10 – Gloucester-Southgate)
In recognition of the historical significance of Gabriela Dabrowski to the community, the City of Ottawa, Province of Ontario and Canada, the City has been asked to name the tennis courts in Russell Boyd Park, located at 1735 St. Bernard St., “Gabriela Dabrowski Tennis Courts”. Ms. Dabrowski is a long-time resident of Gloucester-Southgate and the first Canadian female to win a senior Grand Slam title with her win at the 2017 French Open.
Joe Messner Boat Launch (Ward 10 – Gloucester-Southgate)
In recognition of Joe Messner’s extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name the boat launch in Eccolands Park, located at 334 River Road, “Joe Messner Boat Launch”. Joe Messner was instrumental in having a boat launch installed at Eccolands Park, which would become the only launch between Mooney’s Bay and Manotick. Joe, a 15-time national water ski champion and his daughter Pat, a world champion water skier, taught water sports to hundreds of children every summer at Eccolands Park.
W.O. Wilhelmina Walker Park (Ward 13 – Rideau-Rockliffe)
In recognition of the historical significance to Canada of Wilhelmina Walker, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name the future park, located at 305 Lysander Place, “W.O. Wilhelmina Walker Park”. Wilhelmina Walker served as the Commanding Officer of the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.
Lt. Col. William G. Barker VC Park (Ward 13 – Rideau-Rockliffe)
In recognition of the historical significance to Canada of William G. Barker, the City has been asked to name the future park located on the northeast corner of Codd’s Road and Hemlock Road, “Lt. Col. William G. Barker VC Park”. Lieutenant Colonel William George Barker, a skilled gunman and pilot of the First World War, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the conflict. The Overseas Military Forces of Canada recognized Barker as “holding the record for fighting decorations” in WWI.
Ed Laverty Fields (Ward 16 – River)
In recognition of the historical significance of Ed Laverty to the City of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, and Canada, the City has been asked to name the two sports fields within McCarthy Park, located at 3320 Paul Anka Drive, “Ed Laverty Fields”. Ed Laverty was passionate about sports and was instrumental in the development and growth of touch football, locally, provincially and nationally. Ed, who was the founder and driving force behind the Ottawa Nepean Touch Football League (ONTFL), was inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, and received the Mayor’s Cup Award in 2013.
Don Boudria Park (Ward 19 – Cumberland)
In recognition of the exceptional service of The Honorable Don Boudria, P.C. to the City of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, and Canada, the City has been asked to name the future park, located at Encore Phase 5-6 Park Block 120 at Jerome Jodoin Drive and Decoeur Drive, “Don Boudria Park”. Don Boudria first served his community as City Councillor for Cumberland Township, went on to serve as a Member of Provincial Parliament for Prescott-Russell, and was later elected Member of Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. During his parliamentary career, Don Boudria held several Cabinet positons. Outside of his Parliamentary work, Don Boudria has served his community in a number of volunteer capacities.
