Firefighters extinguished a grass fire just south of Munster on Saturday, the day after Ottawa Fire Services issued a ban on open fires.
A passerby called 911 just after noon on Saturday after noticing that a large area of grass and brush was on fire near Franktown Road and Woods Road, just south of Munster and west of Richmond.
The fire appeared to have been ignited from an unattended burn pile, said Ottawa Fire Services in a media release. Firefighters got the blaze under control and crews remained on scene to make sure it was out.
On Friday, the fire department issued a city-wide ban on open fires in order to prevent fires in dry grass and brush. The ban will remain in place until green grass begins to poke through the tall dead grass.
“Certain periods in the year create conditions that make even controlled burning dangerous and this risk can quickly lead to fast and uncontrolled spread of fire,” warned the department in a release.
The ban applies to all open-air fires, including campfires, agricultural burns and brush pile burns.
