A 36-year-old man was charged after allegedly blowing through a stop sign and evading Kingston police on a moped just metres from Queen’s University campus early Wednesday morning.

Around 4:45 a.m., police said a patrol officer spotted the driver run a stop sign at the intersection of Earl Street and University Avenue.

The officer attempted to pull the man over, but he allegedly took off down Earl Street.

Police said the man evaded officers by weaving in and out of streets just west of Victoria Park and Memorial Park.

He was apprehended after he lost control of his vehicle on Pine Street after a five-minute chase. Const. Cam Mack confirmed the man did not sustain any injuries.

Police said they also found a small quantity of suspected “hydro-morph” pills in the man’s shoes during a search.

He was charged with failing to stop for police and possession of a controlled substance. Kingston police said that the man was also wanted out of Napanee, but did not say for what.

No name was released.

Crimes involving mopeds are relatively minor in Kingston, said Mack.

“We run into issues with mopeds and e-bikes as far as obeying traffic rules or being properly licensed and insured, but we do run into things like this on occasion.”
