The province is throwing $1 million into the kitty for a $3.7-million upgrade to the Blackburn Arena.

The upgrades to the arena and community hub area will include a 6,700-square-foot expansion, new multipurpose space for community use, enlargement of the main lobby and shared space for recreational and cultural events, said Marie-France Lalonde, MPP for Ottawa-Orléans.

First revealed at city budget discussions last year, the improvements also change rooms, fully accessible stands, a parking lot expansion, and changes to make the ice suitable for sledge hockey.

In particular, change rooms are being expanded to accommodate the fast-growing girls’ hockey teams.

In a release, the province noted the arena is part of a larger community hub that includes athletic facilities (fields, courts), a playground, community garden, public library, shopping centre and the ward councillor’s local office.

The project will help build an inclusive community by engaging seniors, veterans and youth, and bringing people together to improve their health and wellbeing.
