Fire burned through the roof of an eight-unit condo building in central Gatineau early Monday and torched the building next door as well, causing an estimated $1 million in damage.
No one was hurt, but as many as 60 people had to be evacuated from the burning building and from nearby homes around 3 a.m.
At least 20 people live in units that are now uninhabitable.
Gatineau’s fire department sent 17 trucks and 52 firefighters to fight the blaze, which was under control a little before 9 a.m. The units that were not burned have major smoke and water damage.
The four-storey building is near the intersection of la Vérendrye and de l’Hôpital boulevards.
