A dozen homes near La Pêche were evacuated as a precaution Monday while fire crews battled an “out of control” brush fire nearby.
According to Josée Forest of MRC des Collines, two police officers on patrol spotted a “significant” amount of smoke while en route to Edelweiss around 1 p.m. The officers changed course and discovered the source of the smoke was a large brush fire on Beech Road.
The officers called in the fire department and assisted with preventive measures, including ordering the evacuations of 12 homes in the vicinity of the “rapidly-spreading” blaze.
Reinforcements from Val-des-Monts were called in to assist La Pêche firefighters, and the flames were brought under control after approximately 45 minutes.
No homes were affected by the fire and no one was injured.
Officials credited the “vigilance” and quick action of the two officers who responded.
