A fire that forced more than 70 senior residents to flee their residence early Sunday morning caused more than $1-million damage to the 66 unit retirement home in Centrepointe.

Fire officials said the four-alarm fire started around 3 a.m. on the roof and attic of a parking structure, at The Meridian retirement home near Algonquin College. Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the common area that links 1 and 3 Meridian Place. Officials said about 60 of the 66 units were affected by smoke.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal said the investigation has been taken over by the Office of the Fire Marshal, a standard procedure for fire damage higher than $450,000.

No one was injured in the fire, though paramedics said one resident was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Paramedics, city officials, and those with the Red Cross and Salvation Army worked with residents at nearby Ben Franklin Place to arrange temporary shelter.

Cardinal confirmed 57 of the displaced residents were staying with family or friends. Three found temporary homes in area retirement homes as officials continued to investigate the cause of the fire.
