Three animals snatched during a zoo caper in central Ontario were still missing Saturday, a day after police collared a 21-year-old Ottawa man in connection with the heist.
“It’s been absolutely devastating,” said Marina Huygen, the office assistant at the Elmvale Jungle Zoo, about 20 kilometres north of Barrie, Ont.
JC the lemur, Stanley the tortoise and Agnes the baby Gibbon monkey still hadn’t been found as of mid-afternoon Saturday.
Agnes the baby gibbon was one of three animals stolen from the Elmvale Jungle Zoo.
Huronia West OPP responded to a break and enter at the zoo early Thursday. On the zoo’s Facebook page, staff made a tearful plea for witnesses to call police and help find their “babies.” The zoo offered a $5,000 reward for information which would bring the animals home and said an “anonymous animal lover” was offering an additional $5,000.
Police hopped into action. Two other OPP units, including street crime cops in Lanark County and the Ottawa Police Service, joined the investigation. They identified a suspect.
Alex Perlmutter, 21, from Ottawa, was arrested in connection with the theft.
On Friday, police said they found Alex Perlmutter in Mount Albert, east of Newmarket. Police didn’t announce charges.
Huygen said staff at the zoo are heartsick, comparing the loss of the animals to the loss of a child or family pet.
Stanley the tortoise is also missing after he was stolen from the Elmvale Jungle Zoo.
It appears the thief cut through a fence in the flamingo area before grabbing the lemur, tortoise and monkey, Huygen said.
The man arrested wasn’t a former employee or affiliated with the zoo, she said.
Police estimated the value of the animals at $20,000.
