John Fraser was out of the red and into the black Wednesday.
The Liberal incumbent in Ottawa South rolled out simple black and yellow campaign signs bearing no resemblance to Liberal election material. The new signs say, “Stop Doug Ford Vote John Fraser.” There’s no Liberal logo and not a splash of Liberal red.
Fraser scoffed at the notion that he’s turning his back on his party.
“I have thousands of red signs out there with Liberal, and my name and my face all over it,” Fraser said.
“It’s a call to action to the people of Ottawa South who don’t want to see Doug Ford in the premier’s office.”
Fraser is fighting for his political life, with PC candidate Karin Howard possibly on the verge of turning the riding blue. He said his own party’s polling shows he’s in “an exceptionally tight race” in Ottawa South. (On Wednesday, he tweeted a sample of what he said was his campaign’s polling, showing Howard slightly ahead).
Howard called into question Fraser’s ethics.
“The signs are a rock-bottom low and the demonstrate a real desperation. I think the voters know that they can’t trust this kind of a manoeuver this close to an election,” Howard said.
“When they see yellow signs with black lettering on them, that mimics the Elections Ontario colours and it’s really deceptive, and I think the Liberals must be ashamed to use their own colours and the public is going to see that.”
The NDP’s Eleanor Fast has also attracted solid support in the riding, but it looks like Ottawa South will be a battle between the Liberals and PCs in the provincial election Thursday. The riding has been Liberal since Dalton McGuinty Sr. won in 1987. His son, Dalton McGuinty, the former premier, carried the torch in 1990 until he quit in 2013. Fraser, who worked for the former premier McGuinty, won the 2013 byelection in the riding.
Fraser said his campaigns have used off-colour signs before.
“I have thousands of red signs all over. We used these signs and they’re a different colour because yellow and black are the best colour combination to grab people’s attention. They stand out more,” Fraser said. “Everybody’s been looking at the same colour — orange, red, blue, green — now they’re seeing yellow and black.”
There are 35 non-red signs, plus six smaller lawn signs in rotation, Fraser said.
Asked if Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne’s concession last weekend hurt or helped him, Fraser said it helped him “incredibly.”
