Voters in the Eastern Ontario riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell will have to wait a little longer than the rest of the province to learn the results of Thursday’s election.
Citing “unavoidable delays or interruptions” at a polling station, the Chief Electoral Officer of Ontario has extended voting hours by 90 minutes in the riding, until 10:30 p.m.
As a result of the delay at polling station 012, results for the entire riding will only be released once all the polls close, according to a release from Elections Ontario.
Most polls close at 9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. CST) across the province.
Two other ridings were affected by delays, according to Elections Ontario.
Polls will close in the Toronto riding of York South-Weston at 9:40 p.m., and will remain open until midnight (CST) in the newly-formed northwest Ontario riding of Kiiwetinoong.
Election results for each of the three ridings will not be released until after the polls have closed in each district.
The Glengarry-Prescott-Russell riding is being contested by Liberal Pierre Leroux, PC Amanda Simard and NDP Bonnie Jean-Louis.
Other candidates include the Green Party’s Daniel Reid, Libertarian Darcy Neal Donnelly and the Ontario Party’s Joel Charbonneau.
The largely rural and majority francophone riding has no incumbent following Liberal MPP Grant Crack’s retirement from provincial politics in early April.
The riding includes the municipalities of Clarence-Rockland, Township of Russell, Alfred and Plantagenet, the Nation, Casselman, Hawkesbury, Champlain, North Glengarry plus that part of Ottawa located in the former municipality of Cumberland.
Covering 2,979 square kilometres, the riding is home to 109,980 people.
